The Challenge
Idealist was launched in 1995, on a shoestring but with an ambitious goal: to be the starting place for anyone anywhere who wants to make the world a better place. We’ve come a long way since then, but we still have a long way to go.
Today Idealist is the most popular online resource for the nonprofit sector, with information provided by 70,000 organizations around the world, 100,000 unique visitors every day, and a staff of 25 in New York and Portland.
That’s the good news. The challenge, for us and for a great designer, is to reach many more people, and to serve and engage each user better than we are now.
If you like thinking big while also sweating the details, and if you want your work to have an immediate impact, this could be a dream job.
You will be primarily responsible for the look & feel of, and its usability on all  platforms. In addition, you will be in charge of harmonizing our branding on various social media sites, as well as creating online ads, widgets, etc. as needed.
You should be comfortable talking through – and advocating for – your ideas and mock-ups with web developers, product managers, and other stakeholders, both in person and remotely. And you should relish the process of dialogue, user feedback, and constant iteration required to create and maintain a great site.
  • A good eye, a sense of beauty, and a desire to change the world through your work
  • Several years’ experience designing effective interactive experiences
  • Mastery of Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator
  • Strong HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Freakish attention to detail
  • Experience designing mobile apps a plus
Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is in the $65,000 – $85,000 range, depending on qualifications and experience.  We offer a very competitive full benefit package, including 20 paid vacation days in the first year, 10 paid holidays, 401K matched retirement plan, and health, dental, vision, and disability insurance. Also, our office has a roof deck, bicycle parking, showers, and a fancy espresso machine.
We can offer some relocation assistance for those who aren’t currently based in Portland, OR.
