Public Insight Data Specialist and Designer
Position located in St. Paul, MN or Oakland, CA
Public Media is looking to hire a Data Specialist and Designer who
brings to the table a perfect marriage of right brain creativity and
left brain analytics. We are looking for someone who is an explorer and
loves to take on new challenges, as we are perfecting a new type of
journalism, called Public Insight Journalism.TM Our mission
is to create a more relevant journalism of collaboration and community
engagement, which relies on a network of people-The Public Insight
Network. The network provides their insights, first-hand knowledge,
experiences and expertise to news organizations around the country,
including regional public radio and television stations, online and
print media, and national radio shows like Marketplace. We are looking
for innovative, solution-oriented, hard-working, and insightful problem
solvers to expand our existing library of videos, maps, diagrams, data
visualizations, serious games and animations for print, websites and

Job Requirements

Our ideal candidate will exhibit the following key skills:
  • 6+
    years using and working with data sets and data visualization tools to
    provide qualitative and quantitative information in a website
  • A fascination with human behavior and motivations and be able to share your brilliant insights to journalists
  • Experience working under pressure, while maintaining a cool demeanor
  • Excellent understanding of technical processes and be able to teach your processes to those who aren’t as technically savvy.
  • This
    exciting role will also require a skill set rich with Graphic User
    Interface (GUI) design, Information Design, User Experience Design
    (UXD), Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Ajax, CSS and HTML experience. 
Additional “nice to have’s”:
  • Familiarity with content management systems
  • Advanced skills with design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Flash etc.)
  • Experience in R or other analysis and graphics tools, such as protoviz, Flare, GGplot , Tableau or Reshape.
  • Experience creating APIs
  • Fluent
    in Microsoft office suite of applications (Word, Excel, Power Point,
    etc.); familiarity project management and collaboration tools such as
    Google docs, Basecamp, Confluence, MFST Project a plus.
  • Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, or other graphics and photo editing applications
  • Knowledge
    of site analytics tools including Google Analytics, Omniture;
    experience with web trends and social networking tools and sites (FB,
    Twitter, TweetDeck, …)
  • Bilingual
