Location: New York, NY

The Authors Guild seeks a contract Developer to build a Web site with transactional functionality and a database back-end, from beginning to end.  You will work through the entire process from designing the site’s infrastructure through its final production deployment.
Required skills:
  • Experience building transactional Web sites that are stable, reliable, and maintainable.
  • SQL database experience including table structure design.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented design methodologies and design patterns.
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX front-end programming.
  • Ability to accurately implement code based on formal written specifications and wireframe prototypes.
  • Experience with Agile-like development methodologies and a formal QA cycle.
  • Accurate estimation skills for work delivery.
  • Experience with managing a code base in version-control and coordinating its deployment to development and production servers.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills—you’ll be working closely with a Product/Project Manager.
  • Enthusiasm to work in a small team where you’ll be involved in every step of the implementation and deployment, not just writing code.
Because we have not begun implementing the site, you will have input into the language used for development.  We’re currently considering both PHP and Ruby.
The Authors Guild is an established not-for-profit dedicated to promoting and supporting authors and publishing.  If you’re enthusiastic about books and authors, then you’ll find this project particularly exciting.  You must be available to work in our New York office—if you’re used to technology startups, you might be pleasantly surprised by how little stress and chaos you’ll find.
