Barnes & Noble.com: JavaScript Front End Developer (NOOK Study Applications)

Posted by | September 20, 2012 | Web Pro Job Tips

Location: New York, NY

Overview:
Barnes & Noble’s eCommerce group is
looking for people with vision and energy to help us in our quest to
change the future of reading.  We are the world’s largest bookseller and
one of the world’s fastest growing digital media and consumer
technology companies with annual revenues near $7 billion.

Our
businesses include the nation’s highest rated and most heavily
trafficked specialty retail stores, digital content and hardware sales
through our exploding NOOK(tm) brand, college bookstores, and online
retailing through BN.com.

We are investing in all of our business initiatives, so the opportunities to make an impact have never been greater.
BN.com
is making a major investment in digital books, and our mantra is: “any
book, anytime, anywhere”.  There are millions of phones and desktops out
there just waiting for a great reading experience without the need for
additional hardware. Help us make reading more accessible to a whole new
generation by making readers as common as music players, and equally
ubiquitous. That is our team. We come to work because we want to, not
because we have to.  This is not your father’s development shop. You
will be working on some seriously cool code!
Responsibilities:
  • Work
on the v.Next set of features for NOOKstudy (the world class Mac and PC
based eTextbook and study tool) and NOOK for PC and NOOK for Mac.
  • Develop
client side object oriented JavaScript application using HTML5 and CSS3
(yes, the good stuff that you’ve always wanted to work with).
  • Write
code that looks and feels more like a desktop application than a web
page. Pssst… it actually will be running inside of a custom WebKit
based desktop application (i.e. no cross browser compatibility
    worries/headaches).
  • Work with the C++ developers to define custom browser API extensions.
  • Work with an Agile team of really bright people (the “best of the best” at Barnes and Noble) in a small startup-like atmosphere.
Qualifications:
  • You cut your teeth on JavaScript form validation years ago and haven’t looked back.
  • Now you write entire applications as JavaScript and HTML and only access dynamic server via Ajax data.
  • You understand why it is important to separate structure from presentation from behavior.
  • When you go out to eat at a restaurant, you wonder why the menu isn’t presented in JSON.
  • You know the difference between a <div> and a <span> (seriously, please!)
  • You wish IE6 would “just go away already”.
  • You thrive in a fast paced work environment and get a rush from releasing a new build.
  • You have a love for technology and are generally curious to read, discover and play with new gadgets.
  • You truly comprehend the ins and outs of jQuery but you use it as a tool and not a crutch.
  • You have written your own JavaScript framework/library because it’s fun.
  • Attending JavaScript meetups is something that you enjoy doing in your free time.
  • What we’re trying to say is that you have 5+ years of hard core JavaScript experience and that CSS and HTML are child’s play.
  • A good sense of humor is a plus.
Barnesandnoble.com LLC is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/D/V
