Location: Toronto or anywhere

Bento Box is a fast-paced but easygoing team of three people working on a single industry focused Web application built on our PHP-based framework, Daimio.
We’re developing at breakneck speed and need some help structuring the behaviour/front-end layer of our application before our scripts and snippets get completely out of control. Our developer and interface designer know just enough jQuery to get themselves into trouble!
We are looking for someone who has:
  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript and jQuery 1.4+
  • Experience designing and structuring the behaviour layer of Web applications for extensibility, reusability, readability, etc.
  • Serious organization and code optimization and testing chops
  • Crazy clear communication style and the ability to jump in feet-first to a project that is well underway
The project would start in mid-November.
Within about four weeks, we’ll need you to:
  • Assess existing JavaScript/jQuery base (rewriting custom libraries and functions as necessary)
  • Design and set up a flexible structure on the behavior layer to support current and future application interfaces
  • Train us on how to use and extend our shiny new JavaScript base – we are eager to learn how to do things right!
If you’re really good, and you like us, and you’re available for a longer term engagement, we’d love to have you on retainer.
  • Be responsible for the jQuery/JavaScript layer and test suite, ensuring it works perfectly 100% of the time
  • Collaborate with UI designer and lead developer on producing new features using JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and a the DAML templating language
  • Actively contribute to the design and architecture of solutions – we don’t do mockups and are not pixel-perfectionists. We discuss problems and rapidly iterate working solutions and refine them when the time is right.
  • Help us work on the open-source release of Daimio
We’d be super excited if:
  • You’ve written a jQuery plugin
  • You share your experiences and knowledge online
  • You have encyclopedic knowledge of cross-browser/platform quirks (Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer 7.0+) and how to wrangle them non-repetitively
  • You’ve got some interaction/user interface design skills with a fresh, clean, lightweight touch
  • You’re interested in mobile interfaces and the jQuery mobile framework
  • You’re all over HTML5 and CSS3
  • You’re familiar with MongoDB
What to expect:
  • Flexibility: Work your own hours and from wherever you live.
  • Crystal clear communication and high accountability
  • Respect for the blood, sweat, tears and years it took to develop your skills

To apply: Please apply to with a few sentences about your approach to structuring the behavior layer in a complex, non-JavaScript Web app, a link to your site/blog/portfolio demonstrating your work (you can skip the resume).
