Berklee College of Music is looking for a talented Web Software Developer to
help us educate tomorrow’s music industry leaders. Join the all-star

Under the supervision of the Software Engineering Manager for
Content, the Web Software Developer is responsible for building software that
powers the learning environment and educational experience for our students and
instructors, as well as developing internal tools used to create and manage our
interactive content. The Web Software Developer works in a diverse environment
integrating best-of-breed open source technology, including Linux,
PostgreSQL, object-oriented PHP, Moodle, Ruby on Rails and
third-party proprietary software API operations.
Essential Duties
and Responsibilities:
• Develop high quality, reusable, and extensible web software
from design, coding and testing to production and maintenance.
• Help content team continually enhance and refine innovative
systems for developing world-class educational content, supporting strong
instructional design, facilitating academic administration, and enriching our
learning experience across multiple delivery platforms.
• Support design team efforts to envision an optimal user
experience for new software and take pride in its detailed implementation.
• Strengthen existing technology platform and the integration
of our applications across Rails, PHP, cloud, and legacy environments.
• Provide day-to-day issue resolution for students and
instructors, and support for staff users of Berkleemusic’s custom-developed
software platform.
• Stay current with technology and research new trends in
e-learning and mobile computing.
• BS in information technology, computer science or a related
• 5 years experience developing large-scale database-backed
web applications using open source tools.
• Strong data modeling and query skills and ability to
effectively weigh performance, extensibility, and modularity in design and

deadlines, prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously with great
efficiency and attention to detail.
• Must be a self-starter who works well with others in an
unstructured, start-up like team-oriented environment.
• In addition to expert knowledge of open source server-side
web technologies, must possess strong knowledge of HTML and client-side
including CSS, XHTML, JavaScript, DOM and Ajax techniques.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, PHP, Moodle, XSL and
PostgreSQL a plus.
