Blue State Digital: Content Strategist/Information Designer

Posted by | September 4, 2011 | Web Professional Jobs Blog

Location: New York, NY, or Washington, DC

Blue State Digital, a strategic consulting firm specializing in online engagement, seeks an experienced mid-level or senior-level content strategist with IA skills to help us develop and maintain successful advocacy campaigns for our clients.
Applicants should be comfortable with the building blocks of online engagement and user experience, including information architecture, content management systems, blogging software, website design, video, SEO, analytics, online fundraising, email communications, and social media.
If you don’t know what “call to action” means in a digital context, this probably isn’t the right job for you.
The ideal candidate has the brain of an editor and the eyes of a designer. While strong writing skills are essential, this isn’t primarily a writing role. We’re looking for someone who understands how to build a consistent, simultaneous narrative across multiple channels, and also how to document the necessary strategies in a variety of editorial and visual formats. These formats may include sitemaps, wireframes, user flows, PPT/Keynote presentations, blog pipelines, editorial memos, and strategic assessments.
A typical assignment might involve:
  • Participating in a large kickoff meeting with a client.
  • Brainstorming with colleagues to set creative priorities and map out a strategic plan.
  • Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the client’s existing website using standard formal techniques (content inventories, gap analyses, competitive research, stakeholder interviews, etc.).
  • Developing fresh information structures, content hierarchies, editorial formats, and calls to action for the new site.
  • Creating low-fi/medium-fi wireframes that align with the client’s goals and communicate the site’s information framework to the client and to BSD’s design and production departments.
  • Collaborating with other BSD departments, including design, SEO, analytics, email communications, and production, to ensure that the content plan is informed by their expertise.
  • Working closely with BSD’s design and production departments to ensure successful implementation of the website.
  • Participating in regular meetings or calls with the client.
  • Creating assorted other deliverables as needed, including editorial memos, content matrices, user flows, best-practices docs, and experience briefs.
This is a mid-level or senior-level full-time position based in New York or Washington, D.C. We may also need freelancers in the coming months, so feel free to apply with that in mind.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-6 years of experience as a content strategist or in similar role(s)

The ability to:
  • Express abstract concepts in concrete ways
  • Create attractive, polished documents
