The Open Learning Initiative builds rich, interactive and effective online courses. We are aninnovative, multidisciplinary team pairing research and engineering to increase access to and improve outcomes in higher education. We use data and research to drive our decision making. We are seeking a creative and skilled front end software engineer to implement user interfaces for our web-based learning environment.
? Work at the intersection of design, technology, and learning science; create solutions to push the frontier of effective online education.
? Collaborate with software engineers, learning scientists, course developers, domain experts, visual designers, and usability specialists to specify user interface requirements.
? Faithfully implement visual design comps into efficient, pixel perfect, cross-browser and standards compliant HTML, CSS and Javascript.
? Work closely with UI designers and the software engineering team to ensure that your solutions are feasible and their implementations are accurate.
? Implement designs directly into the web tier using XSL, JSP/JSF, GWT UiBinder, and other front-end technologies.
? Migrate existing websites and tools to conform to a consistent style guide and set of technologies.
? Document solutions and design decisions. Track issues and tasks using bug tracking and project management software.
? Perform detailed quality assurance testing of all work products.
? Work on multiple projects simultaneously, requiring attention to detail and the ability to work within constrained timelines.
Technical Requirements
? Expert knowledge of modern HTML, CSS and Javascript, including new and emerging standards.
? Ability to process and translate XML using XSLT and XPath.
? Experience using Javascript frameworks such as Mootools, JQuery and GWT.
? Ability to follow web accessibility standards including WCAG and Section 508.
? Familiarity with SEO principles, Google Analytics and data driven design.
? Familiarity with web speed optimization techniques and tools.
? Experience using Subversion or other version control system.
? Ability to work efficiently in an IDE; experience with NetBeans, Oxygen and Firebug a plus.
? Content management experience using Joomla and PHP a plus.
? Experience in tailoring designs and content for mobile devices a plus.
? A portfolio demonstrating a well grounded background in modern interface design and implementation.
? A passion for the interfaces you build, but the flexibility to allow research and data to challenge your ideas.
? A willingness to advocate for simple and focused concepts to drive student learning and the knowledge of when to defend design choices.
? Ability to follow and contribute to a standard style guide.
? Understanding of semantic markup and reasons for separating content and presentation.
? Must be team-oriented, communicate clearly and effectively, and demonstrate the ability to work well with others in a creative and collaborative environment.
Hiring Salary Range : $55,000 – $70,000
