We’re looking for a great developer to join our team.
Firebox is a 12 year young, profitable and growing company based in
London. We find amazing products from across the globe and offer great

We’ve got big plans for the company and need you to help us bring
them to life. We’re looking for someone with experience and passion for
building systems and products to support our goal of delivering super
high customer satisfaction.
Much of our code is written in PHP which we expect you to have
mastered, but you should also be something of a generalist – someone
with a balance of front and back end skills, who is comfortable
switching between technologies and languages. We develop rapidly and
new projects come up all the time.
You should be a self-starter and you probably have some interesting
hobby projects to show us. You’ll be empowered to find your own
solutions to difficult problems, so if you want lots of structure and a
manager telling you exactly what to do and how to do it, this isn’t the
role for you.
And because this is Firebox we expect you to be a pitch-in kind of
person who loves a challenge and is willing to go the extra mile. There
will always be ad-hoc tasks and projects to get involved in. You’ll be
a strong cultural fit with Firebox, willing to work exceptionally hard
to drive the business. We also want you to have a good sense of humour,
be humble, and approach your work and colleagues with superb honesty
and integrity.
What we’re looking for:
  • Excellent coding skills
  • Fluent in PHP, with proven experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Familiarity with relational databases, experience of writing complex queries (we use MySQL)
  • Someone who is creative, driven and not afraid of working independently
  • Solid experience of object orientation
  • Includes ‘penguins’ in their email subject when applying
  • Experience and discipline of using a VCS (we use Git) in a team environment
  • Highly proficient with HTML/CSS and experience of working with Javascript libraries (we currently use Prototype)
On top of those, if you have any experience of the following (or
their direct equivalents) then we definitely want to hear from you:
  • Ruby on Rails (MVC framework)
  • Solr / Lucene (search service)
  • Chef configuration management
  • Ubuntu administration
  • Scaling and improving website performance
  • Redmine issue tracker
  • Varnish (HTTP caching)
Based in London, SW2. The position is permanent and full time – start date ASAP and salary depending on experience.

To apply: To apply please email covering letter and CV to quoting "Web Developer" in the subject line.
