Location: Boston, MA or Anywhere

We’re a small team (currently 4) located in Boston, MA. The only thing we love more than a beautiful product is our customers. Help Scout launched in April of 2011, as a proud participant in the TechStars startup accelerator. We raised a little money last summer and are on track to be profitable. Crazy I know, we’re building one of those companies … making money, what are we thinking.
Although Help Scout is young, the 3 original co-founders have been working together 7+ years and we compliment each other very well. You will be working with a group of people that gets along really well and lives to build a magical product.
You can see our office and our goofy mugs in the video on our jobs page-
Help Scout is a simple email help desk. In short, it’s the easiest way for two or more people to share an email inbox and stay in sync, which comes in really handy for customer service. The main benefits:
  • It’s invisible to customers, no funky ticket numbers or weird formatting
  • You can use it over email or by logging in the web app
  • It does 98% less than most other help desks and is priced accordingly
Help Scout is mostly PHP today, although we’ve built several tools in Java (search, reports, forthcoming API). Expertise in at least one of these languages is required, both is awesome. Either way, you’ll probably work at least a little with both languages. No language is sacred to us, it’s all about efficiency for the team and execution for the user.
Everything except our mail servers runs on AWS. We’ve been sending high-volume email for years and rolled our own technology there.
  • Supporting customers and dogfooding (using Help Scout)
  • Pulling tasks off our Trello boards and knocking them out
  • Fixing bugs, working on new features, building 3rd-party integrations
  • No more than one “all hands” meeting and one product team meeting
  • We celebrate releases and accomplishments often

You work alongside other members of the product team to make
Help Scout magical. You
give a shit about the details; even the ones other people don’t see. You are
very organized, in that you can prioritize, execute and complete a project
without coaching. Most of all, you care deeply about making a product that
thrills customers daily.

You are strong working with the following:
  • PHP and/or Java
  • MySQL
  • Subversion, Amazon Web Services
We also want people that write. At a minimum, you can write documentation or specs that make sense to anyone on the first read. If you like writing more, great!
  • You currently reside in or near Boston, MA. Remote is possible, but since we’re a small team, it’s important to build a culture here.
  • Open source code/contributions
  • We won’t kill you – Startups are hard enough. We won’t work you 24/7. Although we work hard, it’s important to have some work life balance.
  • Equity – We can’t pay what big companies can in salary, but we’ll be fair in dishing out meaningful equity.
  • Innovation Allowance – $2,500 annually to learn something and write 1k words about it. Learn to fly a plane, bake a cake or anything in between, just write about the experience and we’ll pay for it.
  • Health Insurance – If you get sick you can go to the doctor.

To apply: Please email Resumes are fine, a link to something you’ve created is better. 🙂
