Hi. If you’re an amazing front-end web engineer — the term “artisan” might resonate better? — or you’re eagerly rising to that level, we have an opportunity that may excite you.
First, a little about us…
We’re ion interactive. We make the leading enterprise SaaS application for digital marketers to create, test and optimize landing pages, microsites, and other app-like web experiences. These are the pages that people receive when they click on ads or links in promotional emails, or if they scan a QR code with their mobile phone. When done well, they can be useful and compelling — helping marketers deliver the right content to the right prospects at the right time.
Our software, LiveBall, is the most advanced in the industry. It’s been adopted by companies such as American Greetings, Dell, DHL, General Mills, Intuit, and many other leading brands, handling millions of respondents each month.
The magic ingredient is our software that lets ordinary marketers create extraordinary landing experiences. It’s an enterprise-oriented SaaS application that was first built in 2007. We’ve made many improvements and extensions to its architecture and capabilities over the past 5 years, but frankly, the “admin” interface for our customers isn’t nearly as exciting as the landing pages people build with it. Yet.
This is where you may make a grand entrance.
We’re looking to hire a terrific front-end engineer to help us really “up” the game of our software’s UX, moving a lot more power into the browser via state-of-the-art Javascript. We’re currently prototyping ideas with Backbone.js (for application structure), RequireJS (for module loading), and Handlebars.js (for templating) to create a much more dynamic and sophisticated user experience. It’s an opportunity to push Javascript to the limit, but to do so with the driving purpose of making users of our software deliriously happy with the result.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in the evolution of a popular, growing product. Your contributions can impact hundreds of name-brand customers — and ultimately millions of end-users — and lay the groundwork for the future of our development team, product roadmap, and our collective entrepreneurial destiny.
We are looking for someone to come to the table with pretty strong experience with Javascript and the DOM already, ideally with jQuery and related libraries. You should have a good foundation of HTML and CSS knowledge, having braved and conquered the challenges of cross-browser development. You should understand the mechanics of Ajax and JSON data structures as second nature. You should have honed your skills for writing clean and reusable code. And you should have a deep appreciation of what makes a software interface usable, productive and fun.
Graphic design skills aren’t required, although they’d be a nice plus. Back-end web engineering experience, particularly with MVC web frameworks such as ASP.NET MVC, Ruby on Rails, or Django, isn’t required either, but that too would be a sweet plus. We talk a lot of C# and SQL on the back-end.
Above all, though, the most important qualities we’re looking for are passion, team spirit, and the innate drive to produce quality work.
ion offers the best of two worlds: we’re a small, growing company of ~40 people with all the exciting dynamics of a ground floor opportunity to make an impact and sidestep bureaucracy; yet we’re also a profitable business that has been cash flow positive for the past three years, with the ability to pay highly competitive salaries, offer a stake in future growth, and include some really nice perks. The company was funded by its three co-founders — the CEO, EVP, and CTO respectively, all experienced entrepreneurs and managers — who are deeply engaged in the business.
We have two locations in the US. Our product development and technical operations team is based here in Cambridge, MA, and the rest of the company is based in Boca Raton, FL. This front-end engineer position would be based in our Cambridge office — a very groovy space in the Cambridge Innovation Center, right across from MIT — so we’d prefer someone already in the area. We do offer flexible hours and support for working remotely, but we’d love to have you in the office most days, since we believe that in-person collaboration can’t be beat.
We work hard because we care deeply about what we do, but we’re also very attuned to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. We believe that’s essential to renewing the creative energy that’s so valuable to our mission, so we have a very generous vacation and time-off policy.
Most of all, we’ve strived to build an incredibly special team — smart, friendly, good humored people with a variety of backgrounds. If everything you’ve read above excites and inspires you, and you think you can really make your mark with us, then we’d love to talk with you.
