The Senior Front-End Designer/Developer is a position for Mountain News Corporation, publishers of the world’s most visited snow sports web site,, and provider of Snow Sports and Summer Mountain Travel content to over 2,000 media companies world wide.  Mountain News Corporation is based in Orinda, California and the operations of MNC, including editorial content, are maintained separate and independent from Vail Resorts’ five mountain resorts and lodging and real estate businesses.
The Senior Front-End Designer/Developer must be able to think in terms of the end-to-end user experience and create designs that are visually appealing, easy to use, and emotionally engaging.
The main focus includes implementing dynamic, data driven designs for existing websites as well as integrated, cross channel initiatives.
This role requires skills in visual design, information architecture, interaction design, code execution and a solid understanding of current rich internet application and web technologies.
  • Lead new user interface designs through the full design and development cycle (including concepts, information architecture, visual/interaction design and code execution)
  • Ability to convert product requirements into a well thought through cleanly coded end product
  • Own the corporate branding and brand guidelines
  • Rapidly prototype and evaluate designs with customers
  • Juggle multiple tasks, handle tight deadlines and high volume of work
  • Work in a team environment, collaborating with back-end developers and project managers
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Stay abreast of new technology to maintain the highest standard of work with extreme attention to detail
  • You must, at some level, think of yourself as a tinkerer. You’ll end up doing things that aren’t in your job description and you should be okay with that
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer programming, computer engineering  or related field preferred, or the equivalent job-related experience and training. Industry knowledge and experience required.
  • 5+ years experience in senior Developer/Designer position
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Windows, MS Office including Word and Excel
  • Ability to read and write English
  • 5+ years of professional experience with web development in production environments for high traffic web sites
  • Ability to transform complex layout (psd) into pixel-perfect presentation-layer (front-end) HTML/CSS/JS templates
  • Experience with server-side languages (PERL, PHP, JAVA, .NET), JavaScript frameworks (jQuery), as well as an understanding of MVC design patterns
  • Experience implementing data-driven websites and Content Management Systems
  • Solid understanding of grid systems, composition, color theory, typography and an obsessive attention to detail
  • Solid understanding of production with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Solid understanding of web browser technologies and cross-browser coding techniques
  • Solid understanding of web standards, accessibility and SEO best practices
  • Familiar and comfortable with HTML5, CSS3 and the concepts of Progressive Enhancement and Graceful Degradation
  • Familiar and comfortable with common APIs (Facebook, Google, Amazon EC2/S3, Twitter, YouTube, etc)
  • Familiar and comfortable with formal QA methodologies, processes and techniques
  • Very strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
Desired Skills/Qualifications: 
  • Experience with UNIX, Perl (ModPerl), Linux in a LAMP environment
  • Experience with Mason
  • Experience with mobile web development
  • Experience in media, publishing, marketing or advertising preferred
  • Agency experience preferred
