myGengo: Lead Designer

Location: Tokyo, Japan


This position is about being the go-to person for design at myGengo. We’re looking for someone who can take our design thinking and execution to a new level.
We need someone who has the experience to build a brand, but the passion and skill to create the small things that ensure our website kicks ass. You must have significant and outstanding experience creating both marketing-led and UX/application design to bring what we need to the role.
Long-term: Establishing design principles that ensure what we do and make is “myGengo” through and through.
Day-to-day: Re-designing our homepage to better establish the brand while improving conversion; Creating a new, streamlined translation order form; Talking to users about what they need from their testing UI; Making a better-converting translator landing page; Producing information design for translator metrics; Creating product tours; Asking translators what pisses them off about the current payment UI; Redesigning the homepage; Creating infographics; Designing new editing areas for String; Designing a more efficient translation interface including new translation memory technology; Designing our analytics screens; hiring a junior designer; etc etc!
myGengo was founded by a designer. So design is fundamental to how we run the company. We’re a rapidly-growing startup addressing a huge market, with a star team of international investors, in a unique location. Come and join us.
  • Execute and oversee all visual design for, our products and advertising
  • Responsible for taking concepts from wireframe, to user-test, to design, to checking implementation
  • Write the majority of first-draft website copy
  • Ensure consistency of style and function throughout the site
  • Design and tweak efficient UIs for our translators (where every lost second counts)
  • Constantly drive to improve conversion rates and customer satisfaction across the site
  • Work closely with developers to rapidly iterate improvements and new functionality
  • Implement minor fixes and prototypes directly in HTML
  • Proactively demonstrate improvement of conversion and other UX-centric metrics 

  • Design-related degree or similar
  • 5+ years experience in a similar role — you must have a portfolio that shows your range
  • Experience managing other designers and ensuring guidelines are adhered to
  • Ability to use paper prototyping and iterative design approaches when useful
  • Great writing skills
  • Ability to communicate your work to developers clearly, and to feedback when they need guidance
  • Passion for user testing, a great listener
  • Great attention to detail. Not satisfied with 95%.
  • Total understanding of the company, the brand, our customers and our translators

Bonus skills:
It’s a bonus, but not required, to have experience in the following:
  • Experience in designing for multi-lingual sites
  • HTML/CSS/jQuery experience

  • Salary negotiable upon experience
