The Digital Media Lead Engineer is a full-time position within NBC Universal’s Digital Media Engineering Team and will lead projects involving the technical design, implementation and management of customized digital media solutions throughout NBC Universal. This person will interface with NBCU Media Works operators, IT technology partners, and key contacts at each business unit, to deliver highly technical solutions for the NBCU Digital Media Delivery group. This may involve interacting with other NBCU groups and brands including NBC, NBCU Cable Networks, Universal Studios, and NBC Owned & Operated Stations.
This is a role that combines broadcast engineering, IT, and ingenuity and would best be filled by someone with a technical background in Computer Science or New Media. The ideal candidate will be motivated and a detail-oriented professional who can contribute to systems architecture design, as well as manage infrastructure deployment and change processes.
  • Lead projects responsible for high speed file transport, video transcode, video streaming and publishing across NBCUniversal television and cable properties
  • Ensure all project related engineering resources are on task while covering technical/project gaps as necessary
  • Test/evaluate new technologies for ingest, delivery and management of digital media across the enterprise
  • Collaborate with vendors and business partners to ensure timely delivery of digital media solutions to the business
  • Anticipate technology opportunities for DME customers and ensure business commitments are delivered on time, on-spec and on budget
  • Collaborate with technical resources across the NBCU Media Technology organization (e.g. server, storage, network, facilities, edit, transmission) to help fulfill deployment objectives for our customers. Ensure all activities within DME are visible and transparent to maximize productivity and minimize disruptions in service
  • Assist DME leadership with formalizing SOPs related to the design, implementation and management digital solutions to improve consistency of service delivery. Develop processes and procedures that are rigorous but compatible with our “speed to deliver” philosophy

  • B.S. degree in Information Technology or other technical discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated project planning, organizational and leadership skills
  • Minimum 6 years technical experience in IT, Broadband and/or Broadcast Media
  • Minimum 3 years in an engineering capacity coordinating complex, multi-group projects with team members in geographically dispersed locations
  • Minimum 3 years with digital media concepts: encoding, transcoding, streaming, rights management, watermarking, media formats, media transfer technologies
  • Knowledge of consumer and commercial Internet technologies, application hosting and content distribution strategies
  • Experience in IT systems engineering and data networking. Proven ability to diagnose and resolve application, infrastructure and IP network issues
  • Able to perform in a dynamic, fast paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills

  • Experience leading technical teams without a direct reporting structure
  • Familiarity with Digital Asset Management systems and DRM concepts
  • Hands-on experience with file-based distribution solutions such as Signiant and Aspera
  • Entertainment and/or TV broadcast industry experience
  • Fundamental understanding of software development lifecycle including Agile
  • Experience with standardized UAT and QA processes/procedures
  • Proven ability to work with an IT organization that utilizes a matrix structure. Requires the ability to operate across functions and work with resources external to the Project Team
  • Experience with video editing, satellite transmission and remote newsgathering
