Orbitz is currently looking for a Lead UI Engineer – Web Applications Development to work with the Away Network team in Washington, D.C.
The Away Network is looking for an experienced and passionate user interface developer to lead our UI team. Do you feel passionate about your mark-up and CSS? Strive to make your pages accessible? Live on the cutting edge of Ajax and JavaScript?  Have the leadership skills to oversee multiple projects and a team of UI developers?  If so, you could be the UI Engineer for us.
Our team is responsible for building Web applications for some of the top travel research websites around the world which are used by millions of users.  You’ll implement web site designs using XHTML, CSS 2.0, and advanced JavaScript.  You don’t need to know how to design (we have a graphic designer for that), but you should know what looks good and works well. You will play a key role in solving the development challenges of building sites worldwide.
  • Oversee multiple projects using Agile development methodologies with geographically distributed teams
  • Act as primary technical representative for UI team
  • Translate prototypes and PSDs into launch-ready, valid HTML/CSS
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and software engineers to ensure design vision is maintained, final markup is standards compliant, and UI deliverables are completed on time
  • Identify long-term goals, identify areas of improvement
  • Explore new technologies/industry trends and technical innovation
  • Ownership of UI layer health – code reviews, performance monitoring/improvements, release management, production support
  • Handle multiple project requirements and make appropriate technical decisions
  • Facilitate complex cross-team problem solving and effective technical conflict resolution
  • Understands overall product vision, provides recommendations for product features keeping technical challenges in mind
  • Manage UI team processes,  improve team performance and mentor and develop individual team members
Required Skills:
  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with experience with at least one JavaScript framework (YUI, GWT, Prototype, jQuery, etc.)
  • Experience coding server-side page generation (preferably JSP)
  • Passion for usability Desire to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • 4+ years developing user-facing web interfaces
  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to address problems with innovative solutions
  • Strong command of cross-browser development techniques and browser degradation strategies
  • In-depth knowledge of cross-browser and cross-platform development of XHMTL/CSS-based web sites on PC/MAC: IE6, IE7, IE8, FF, and Safari
  • Extremely familiar with advanced CSS concepts and techniques, including building table-free layouts using semantic markup and CSS
  • Experience in debugging and troubleshooting programming related issues
  • Knowledge of HTML 5 and CSS 3 is a plus
  • Previous exposure to JSTL is a plus
  • Some knowledge of Flash and ActionScript
  • Some experience with localization and internationalization of content
