Have you ever had trouble finding a mover, handyman, dog walker, or any other service provider? If you search on Google, you’ll end up with a lot of big (expensive) companies. If you go to Craigslist, you’ll find plenty of inexpensive service providers, but you won’t know who’s good and who isn’t. SkillSlate is going to change that. By allowing service providers to easily create an online business presence, and by aggregating thousands of providers in each vertical, we leverage the collective power of individuals to rank highly in search, bringing more exposure and business to the little guy.
We’re building a product that has a meaningful impact on people’s daily lives. Having raised funding from top VC’s and angels on the strength of our prototype and business model, we’re looking for the right people to join us so we can take it to the next level.
(1) Back-End Developer Role
We’re looking for a talented, well-rounded developer to accelerate development of our Ruby on Rails-based website and supporting Ruby-based, cloud-hosted applications. (We’re not dogmatic about technology, so if you really want to write something in Erlang or Clojure, it could happen; just be prepared to justify it.) This position is focused on back-end work, but if you have full-stack experience, that’s a plus.
Requirements
  • 3+ years of software development experience
  • 1+ year of experience with an MVC web framework (Rails, Django, Symfony, etc.)
  • Solid grasp of agile development practices
  • Passion for elegant, DRY code that gets the job done
  • Working knowledge of Git
Pluses
  • Contributions to the open source community
  • Excellent communication skills
(2) Front-End Developer Role
We’re looking for a talented, well-rounded front-end developer to accelerate the development of our Ruby on Rails-based website. You should know HTML, CSS, and web standards like the back of your hand, and be comfortable communicating with back-end developers to get the data you need to surface. You should also not only have the ability to make mockups come to life, but have enough interaction design sense to know when they’re not ready yet.
We’re based in Manhattan (Chelsea/Flatiron loft office). The ideal candidate can start ASAP and we’re open to a telecommuting arrangement for a stellar candidate who can’t relocate to NYC. We’re a small, informal team, so this is the place for you if you prefer rough consensus and running code over bureaucracy.
