Suitable Technologies is a Bay Area startup working to create an innovative new product for something called “remote presence.”  (Another common term is “robotic telepresence.”)  Our first product, in development now, is similar to video chat on a computer you can drive around.  Unlike videoconferencing, you’re not stuck to a wall or desk.  It becomes your physical presence, anywhere in the world, with the freedom to move and interact with people as if you were there.
Our technology has already been seen by millions of people, and we think the potential impact is substantial.  The company has funding and is growing quickly.
About this Position
We’re looking for a multi-talented designer to help us design, build, and refine the user interfaces for interacting with our robots.  The UI is built using current HTML5/CSS3 techniques (embedded), so we think this could be a unique opportunity for someone with experience in web or mobile design to work on something a little different.
Primary Function
Create effective, attractive, and professional user experiences for our remote presence products. Lead or participate in all aspects of UI development, including concept generation, interaction design, front-end software development, visual design, testing, and user studies.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Design interfaces and interaction models for our entire product suite, including native clients, on-device applications, and the web
  • Collaborate with engineers and product management
  • Rapidly experiment and iterate on interface and interaction concepts
  • Create wireframes, storyboards, and preliminary design ideas
  • Develop concepts in code and on device hardware
  • Produce visual designs for use in our products
  • Conduct user studies, usability tests, and other tasks to define product requirements
  • Communicate design priorities to the rest of the team
Skills / Job Requirements
  • Degree in HCI, Design, or a related field
  • Strong design, communication, and presentation skills
  • Experience with web development using HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Experience producing visual designs for a consumer or business product
  • Desire to solve problems and get things done
We’re still building out our core team, so there’s a lot to do.  Please get in touch if you’d like to know more!
