Thayer School of Engineering
Thayer School’s mission is “To prepare the most capable and faithful for the most responsible positions and the most difficult service.” To accomplish this mission, we have a unique multidisciplinary approach to engineering education that carries over to our IT philosophy. Rather than just being back-room “crank turners,” our small, agile Computing Services team interacts extensively with faculty, students, staff, and researchers to help them get the most out of our computing resources. We go out of our way to invite everyone at Thayer School to contact us; for example holding “Atrium hours” twice a week, offering cookies to community members and inviting them to ask questions, brainstorm solutions, explain their needs and successes, etc. Systems Administrators and User Support Analysts work together and with everyone at Thayer School to solve problems and help our community be as productive as possible.
We seek a self-motivated Systems Administrator who can be an integral member of our highly-collaborative, mutually-supportive, and flexible team where everyone gets as much responsibility and opportunity to learn as they can handle. This person will have a wide variety of assignments and will need to be comfortable using multiple operating systems and tools, managing both hardware and software. Experience with Windows and Ubuntu (or another Linux distribution) is essential – any other OS experience is a plus. Scripting and programming is also a huge part of what we do, so experience with perl, PHP, Python, C and/or Fortran is required, although being an expert at all of them is not essential. What is essential is the desire and demonstrated ability to quickly learn technologies and tools like this, and to apply them to building robust and automated systems. This person will enjoy broad exposure to all aspects of IT at Thayer School and will lead and support the entire life cycle of our systems, including:
? need identification, investigation and brainstorming
? systems engineering, architecture and design
? selection, acquisition, configuration, integration, development and automation
? deployment, upgrading, maintenance and replacement
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be a crucial member of a small but very strong team; smart and fun people supporting a smart and fun community.
