Who We Are
Shadow Health is what you get when you mashup
healthcare, education, and 3D simulation (aka video games) into a single
awesome startup.
Our software is the result of 7 years of
research on virtual patients conducted at University of Florida’s CS
department.  We were founded in June 2011
in Gainesville, FL, and have spent the past year building a virtual patient
simulation for training nursing students.
Our virtual patients are built on the Unity3D
game engine and include a custom animation system and a natural language
conversation engine.  We deliver the
simulation over a Ruby on Rails web app, which records and analyzes all the
student’s actions with the virtual patient.
As a matter of fact…we just launched our
product nationwide this Fall.  Things are
going great for us – we are well funded and are generating revenue… but best
of all our students and faculty love us!
We’re passionate about the science of education,
crafting simulations, and creating interactive learning experiences.
Our Culture
We pride ourselves on the diversity of our
team.  We have 20 team members ranging
from nurses, instructional designers, script writers, 3D artists, customer
support, QA testing, and sales… and of course developers!
We have a beautiful open-plan office in downtown
Gainesville.  Gainesville is college town
with a small but up and coming startup community.  Places for lunch are plentiful (and cheap),
the folks are friendly, the nightlife is fun – and we are literally right in
the middle of it all.
We rock out to music on the office sound system
while we work, we walk to lunch somewhere downtown together, and walk to the
bar next door for happy hour on Fridays.
What We’re Looking For
We are a high performance, fast-paced team of
passionate individuals.
We need a Ruby on Rails developer who can step
in and grow with us.
We have an effective, albeit slightly chaotic
product management process.  Our
requirements filter in from our nurses, instructional designers, beta testers,
and most importantly our users.  We need
someone who can collect and organize all these requirements, communicate with
the team to prioritize them, and then implement, test, and deploy new features.
We don’t adhere to a strict SW development
methodology, but we use Sprint.ly to manage our workflow, and follow a TDD
process.  We have an active beta tester
program with dozens of testers continually testing our system, in addition to
dedicated QA staff.  We run usability
tests and focus groups constantly, and provide our customers with fanatical
customer support.
Who You Are
1. You love web development, especially Ruby on
Rails.
2. You crank out tests using RSpec and Capybara.
3. While it may not be pretty, you can bang out
front-end HAML/SCSS/Coffeescript… until we get a full time UI/UX designer…
you’ll be hacking the full stack.
4. You think Heroku is the greatest thing ever
(we run a Heroku instance with Memcached, Redis, and Sidekiq).
5. You have a passing familiarity with Amazon
Cloudfront (we use it for secure content distribution).
6. You use GitHub for all of your projects,
because Github rocks.
7. You are passionate about using video games
and simulations to revolutionize how people learn.
Perks
We offer competitive salaries, an amazing work
environment, and will set you up with your ideal engineering rig.  Gainesville is a beautiful town with
affordable housing – if you’re moving here from out of town we’ll pitch in for
your relocation costs.
How To Apply
Drop us an email with a quick explanation of why
this position is interesting to you, and include:
1. links to your portfolio or code samples
2. links to live projects
3. your Github account (if you have one)
4. your Stack Overflow account (if you have one)
This is a full time, on-sight position.
NO RECRUITMENT AGENCIES PLEASE. NO SUBCONTRACTORS
OR RECRUITERS
