We are looking for an additional Ruby hacker to join a small but growing team of like-minded, technology nerds. If it’s your dream to code disruptive, bleeding tech edge web apps that you’ll actually be able to brag about at bars (instead of database management software for some insurance company), you should contact us! If you’d prefer to work on a variety of interesting projects in a relaxed, LA atmosphere rather than a single app in a frantic, SF startup environment, you should email us! If you read Hacker News religiously and want to see your work on the front page, … you get the idea!
This position is located in Culver City, CA. This is a full time position with full medical benefits.
Responsibilities:
  • Write clean, maintainable code (shocker, we know!)
  • Jump into existing projects mid stream
  • Take the lead on a project and potentially interface directly with the client
Required:
  • Real world commercial Ruby / Rails experience with apps you’ve been paid to develop (or developed with blood, sweat, and tears) currently in production
You are a rockstar candidate if you:
  • Have contributed to any OSS projects we already use!
  • Can hold your own at ping-pong
Preferred:
  • git
  • rvm
  • os x dev environment
  • Node.js familiarity
Would be nice:
  • You pleasure program pet projects on the side
A little about us:
We are a small, primarily Ruby on Rails, development company based in Culver City, CA. We mostly work on the initial development and engineering for funded startup companies to help them get their business off the ground without needing to hire an entire engineering team off the bat. The work environment is relaxed and dog friendly – with a kitchen that we stock with snacks, coffee (we have a super-automatic espresso machine), and usually beer. Lunch is brought in daily from one of the many local restaurants. Health benefits are available from the start and we do not count vacation days as long as you are getting your tasks done (a la Netflix).
PLEASE DO NOT REPLY WITHOUT A LINK TO YOUR GITHUB ACCOUNT / PORTFOLIO. Your response will be ignored without one. Seriously!

What you would do: Were looking for someone who can develop capable, lovely user interfaces on our g-speak platform. You’d work with Mezzanine, our collaboration and telepresence product, and on prototypes and research projects.

The technology that we’re building demands that we invent a new set of user interface metaphors. As a UI Designer and Programmer, you’ll be responsible for helping us define the look and feel of our software, products, and platform. Your designs will help to define the next era of human-machine interaction.

We’re building out our core set of UI metaphors and abstractions by creating real applications and observing how our interfaces stand up to real-world use. Your responsibilities will include prototyping, refining and polishing gestural interactions, multi-device and multi-user designs, and rich user feedback. You’ll work with engineering and product managers to develop storyboards and specifications. You’ll design graphical elements used in our applications and for our core libraries.

What interface problems might you be solving on a given day at Oblong? Possibilities include visualizing how two (or more!) users interact with the same digital object; building a zoomable data visualization; developing a gesture for selecting an item in a list; developing a set of gestures to cover all functionality in a complex application; designing interfaces for mobile devices that interact with g-speak applications; designing an interface to teach gestures to new g-speak users; and writing and developing interactive and visual style guides for projects.

What we look for: Are you someone with an equal passion for building software and designing elegant user experiences? We’re looking for someone who might have a background in design and also have picked up programming on the side as a way to help build the things they want to make. Or someone who might be a programmer that spends their weekends reading about classical graphic design. Or any number of other unique design / programmer hybrids.

If this sounds like you and you have the requirements below, we’d like to hear from you!

Requirements:
• Comfortably able to write C++ (or proficient with an advanced creative coding platform like Cinder or openFrameworks)
• Experienced and in love with building interaction design prototypes in code
• Sensitivity to design details
• Comfortable or proficient with graphical software (Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar)
• Ability to work iteratively and at a fast pace
• Appreciation for user interface standards but open to the new ideas and designs demanded by Oblong’s new technology
• Ability to write design and interaction specifications

Bonuses:
• Experience in designing for mobile platforms (Android, iOS)
• Web design expertise
• Strong data visualization skills

Benefits and Perks:
• Competitive salary
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance
• 401K plan
• Gourmet lunches 3 days/week

Please send a portfolio with your application, either as a URL or PDF.

Please note that only those applications with portfolios will be reviewed.

What You Would Do: Are you looking to write code that helps clients solve big, complex, real-world problems? In this position, you’ll have an opportunity to work at a variety of levels of the software stack and wear a lot of hats. As in most truly interesting jobs, this role includes a mixture of exciting heavy lifting and bit-by-bit scaffolding.
Some days are spent doing radically new design and development work, and some days go towards maintenance hacking, glue coding, and contextually necessary wheel reinvention. You might find yourself optimizing low-level algorithms to achieve (say) adequately fast message-passing performance between loosely coupled application components and then the next day work on solving a UI design problem revolving around strategies for effective presentation of a mixture of 2D and 3D data. On another day you might, for example, be working on a suite of visualization and control applications for a huge simulation system.
We try to deliver working code in bite-sized pieces, quickly and iteratively. We spend a lot of time making sure that we’re integrating our new applications with our clients’ existing legacy infrastructures and tools. We also refactor, generalize, and incorporate into our core platform as much of the application code that we write for clients as possible.
Other critical projects that you can contribute to include: the embedding of browser components into 3D and distribute d visualization environments, maintenance and extension of the intranet we use to coordinate work and keep track of what we collectively know, and the design and implementation of a more extensive and community-oriented oblong.com internet panoply.
About Us: Oblong Industries’ innovative technologies transform the way you work, create, and collaborate. The era of one human, one mouse, one screen, one machine is giving way to what’s next: multiple participants, working in proximity and remotely, using a groundbreaking spatial interface to control applications and data spread across every display. This is what Oblong builds. It’s why we’re here.
Founded by MIT graduates whose work spanned realtime computer graphics systems, large-scale visualization techniques, and new methods for human-machine interaction, Oblong’s technology has its roots in over a decade of research at MIT’s Media Laboratory. As a leader in the evolution of digital interfaces, Oblong developed a radically new platform called the g-speak Spatial Operating Environment. With its headquarters in Los Angeles and a European office in Barcelona, Spain, Oblong currently serves Fortune 500 enterprise customers.
Oblong is growing and looking for someone who is excited about working in a dynamic, challenging, and innovative funded start-up environment. This position is full-time and based out of our Los Angeles, CA office. For applicants located outside of the greater LA area, Oblong offers relocation assistance.
What We Look For: If you are a broadly experienced programmer who would like to work in a small-team context developing user-facing applications built on a new gestural/spatial computing platform, we’d like to hear from you.
The right person for this job has at least a few of the following qualifications:
• Fluency in (though perhaps not actual love of) C++ programming
• Actual love of programming in general
• 5+ years of experience writing code in a professional software development environment
• Demonstrated ability to make architecture and feature-set design decisions
• Demonstrated ability to explicate and document design and architecture decisions
• Demonstrated ability to work well with others and follow a spec where one happens to already exist
• Experience designing and implementing user interfaces
• Low-level graphics hacking experience (Open GL or similar)
• Willingness to travel and interact with clients
Benefits and Perks:
• Competitive salary
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance
• 401K plan
• Gourmet lunches 3 days/week
How to Apply: If this position sounds good to you, please provide the following three items in an email to jobs@oblong.com
1. A short cover letter describing to us what you think is interesting about the work going on at Oblong, how your background fits with what we’re doing, and why you want to work with us.
2. A resume in either plain text or pdf format (only plain text or pdf, please).
3. If possible, we’d like to see a piece of your work. Please include a substantial example of your prose writing, or a link to or bundle of sample code, or a pointer to a mailing list thread in which you submit patches or offer contributions to a project, or a deck of slides, or a link to a portfolio of visual design.

To apply: Please provide the three items listed above in an email to jobs@oblong.com.
