MoveOn.org
is looking for creative, hardworking, and self-motivated Online Innovation Interns to join MoveOn Labs, a small
team with one clear, ambitious charge: Figure out the next big online
organizing breakthrough by running a series of tech-enabled experiments that
could truly transform MoveOn—and help us win big—on the Web, on mobile phones,
and via social media. No idea is too bold or crazy. No new technology is
out of the question to experiment with. No project proceeds without some
metrics to measure whether it’s working or not. And nothing is limited by
how we’ve always done things.
Since
our launch six months ago, we’ve tried 36 experiments, including a
crowd-sourced online ballot guide for state and local elections, a
member-driven progressive design contest, and a new tool for doubling sharing
of MoveOn actions on Facebook. We’re working to test a broad range of new
approaches to winning campaigns and tapping the grassroots power of our 5 million
members.
Our upcoming projects
include recruiting bold new progressive champions to run for office, building a
new mobile organizing program to recruit and engage tens of thousands of
members on their phones, and testing new online tools for getting out the vote—plus
whatever other ideas you can help us invent.
If
you’re someone who’s built a Web application in your spare time, or designed a
system for using mobile phones in politics, or can’t stop thinking of creative
ways to use social media to influence elections and organize communities,
you’re the kind of person we’re looking for.
As an Online Innovation Intern, you would dig into new, experimental
projects to find ways to engage millions of people in politics and elections.
Your skills will help
determine the projects you’ll undertake.
·
If you’re a great organizer, you might help figure out how to distribute
our online ballot guide via Web ads and social media, or draft emails to
recruit volunteers for a get-out-the-vote experiment.
· If you’ve got strong tech skills, you might create new Web tools and
make them intuitive and easy to use, like creating a great UI for our local
progressive ballot guide, building games to engage new people in our campaigns,
or designing mobile tools to help get out the vote.

Desired
skills
(you may not have all of these):
·
Significant experience designing Web pages that are functional and
user-friendly (not just pretty), and a good eye for user experience/interface
in Web design.
· Significant experience designing pages in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
· Excellent writing skills—not long-winded academic writing but short,
punchy, action-oriented writing.
· Experience creating or managing the development of Web apps.
· Ability to write code in a common language for Web apps: Perl, PHP,
Rails, Python, Flash, etc.

Required
skills:
· Ability to brainstorm and think creatively about ways to engage people
in politics through the Web. We thrive on new ideas about how to engage more
people in politics—and on our team, no idea is too crazy to say out loud!
· Ability to manage complex projects and hit deadlines.
· Being a self-manager and self-starter. You can work independently, take
feedback well, and help brainstorm new ideas without getting too attached to
your own suggestions.
· A sense of humor.
· A love of good food. (Kidding, but you’d fit right in.)

Location: Anywhere. We have a
virtual office and collaborate online.
Timeframe: Each internship will
run for three months from start date (but may be extended if it works out).

To apply: Please send a cover letter, PDF resume, and either a writing sample or a link to a website or Web application you designed to labs_hiring@moveon.org. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. MoveOn is an equal opportunity employer.
