Location: San Francisco, CA
Do you want to design experiences that help people get their jobs done?
Do you believe a picture is worth a thousand words, but a prototype is priceless?
Do you imagine yourself as the communication bridge between marketing and engineering, fluent in both dialects, but beholden always to the emotional needs of the end user?
Come design great user experiences at Jaspersoft, maker of the world’s most widely used open source business intelligence software!
Your projects will be varied; as a sample, you can expect to work on interfaces for data visualization, application configuration, user preference management, and data source integration. You will also be an important contributor to our effort to unify the user experience across all our products. And, with our schedule of a minor and major software release each year, you will very quickly see your work making a real impact on our customers.
You will have two principle responsibilities.
First, you will design, prototype and document new features for JasperReports Server, our flagship product.
This work will be based on requirements from marketing, engineering constraints and the interactive design goals defined by the User Experience Architect. You will be given specific design problems and asked to lead an iterative design process with stakeholders to evaluate several design options before settling on a particular approach. In this role you will need to be comfortable with a variety of design communication techniques from building prototypes and mocks to delivering presentations, to writing effective emails and developing collaborative personal relationships.
Second, you will be in charge of curating JIF, the Jaspersoft Interface Framework.
JIF is the UI layer for JasperReports Server. Your curation responsibilities will be to work with internal developers and members of our open source community to refine, update and improve the standard objects, styles and interactions that make up the framework. You will be expected to create new objects as required by new product features and workflows, and work directly with developers to animate and integrate them into the overall system.
This is a hands-on, mid-level position reporting directly to the User Experience Architect. You will must be available to work onsite at our San Francisco SOMA office, though you can expect flexibility in your schedule to work from home when appropriate.
You must possess the following skills to be considered for this position:
- expert understanding of CSS and markup and the ability to produce production quality code
- the ability to draw
- an understanding of how to create a presentation that tells a story and makes a point
- the ability to write really, really well
We can’t hire you if you have not
- worked on a web application intended to serve a business need
- had 4 years experience working as a software designer
- produced an online portfolio that we can review
We do not require, but would be excited to learn that you
- have worked on a mobile application
- have experience in the consumer software space
- can build furniture, or fix cars, bake or otherwise demonstrate to us that you know how to make things
